Schweinfurt

Located in the midst of the Franconian wine country, surrounded by low mountain ranges like the Rhön, the Steigerwald and the Hassberge, the former free city of Schweinfurt is now closely linked to inventions that move the world: ball and roller bearings, the modern bicycle with free-wheeling and the Ferrari clutch, all of them have their origin here.

During a tour through the center of Schweinfurt you can see lovingly restored corners of the old town. The town hall (1570-72 built by Nikolaus Hofmann), the marketplace with the birthplace of the poet Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866), St. John’s Church (13th century), the old shot tower (1611) as well as museums and galleries are just some lovely sights. A visit to the Georg Schäfer Museum, which houses the largest and most important private collection of German paintings of the 19th century, is absolutely worth visiting.
